Cats walk diagonally i.e. the left forefoot moves at the same time as the right hindfoot, and vice versa. Thus pairs of footprints are made on each side of the animal's midline, with the fore print usually in front of the rear print (the exception being when the animal is stalking and places the rear paw on the spot where the front paw was.)
