Wapiti 2sq

A wapiti bull in velvet in a managed herd on Fiordland farmland.

Although wapiti in Fiordland have hybridised with red deer, some individuals still exhibit many features typical of wapiti: notably, the distinctive pale body fur and large creamy rump patch that contrasts with their dark-coloured legs, neck, and head. Mature wapiti have antlers with at least 10 points and often 12 or more.
